Equine Law encompasses many distinctly different practice areas, including racing, sales and breeding law, regulatory law, trade association representation, tax and estate planning, business planning (choice of entity and employment, labor and immigration), litigation of a wide variety of contract disputes, liability claims and insurance matters, breeding and farm administration, drug testing and veterinary issues as well as contract negotiation and preparation to name some of the more common practice areas. The available resources on this site, including over thirty years of presentations by equine lawyers at the University of Kentucky National Conference on Equine law (members only access) together with the ACEA lawyer/Member directory may be of assistance in evaluating the need and selection of an Equine Attorney.

Equine Legal Services

Equine Law practitioners often focus on the planning and development of legal structures within which their clients operate equine related businesses. It is such a highly specialized area of practice (despite no formal ABA recognition of the practice area as a particular specialization) that a knowledge of the law and the various nuances of the distinct equine disciplines that there are many different sub specializations within the practice area.

    Some Equine attorneys will specialize in tax and estate matters, some will function as in house counsel to trade associations or governing bodies of the sport.

    Some will work almost exclusively within one breed (Thoroughbreds, Quarter Horses, Warm Blood/Sport Horses, Saddlebred Horses etc.) or one discipline (racing, dressage, hunter/jumpers, eventing, reining, cutting, etc.).
